Ben DeSoto Blog

Ben DeSoto showed our class the Daniel Pink video about corporate creation, etc. From that video, we learned about Atlassian, the Australian company that figured out "one day of autonomy produces things that never emerge." From this philosophy, please- in 10 to 15 sentences- discuss what you would do with 24 hours to work on something of your choice (with the goal/purpose of personal or community improvement). How could you use your unique talents and abilities to construct something for the greater good? Why? Think EMPATHY. Due Tuesday, 9/28, before class. Please include 2 prep phrases, 2 appositive phrases, and 2 participial phrases. Thank you!

  1. In 24 hours, I imagine myself, a dancer of 12 years, listening to music and dancing. Dance is something that has always been important to me. Music doesn't go into my ears, it goes into my heart, melting away the stress of my day. I think this 24 hours would be the most relaxing day I would ever have, an opportunity that rarely comes by me. If I could spend these hours focusing on nothing but movement and rhythm, I would have a clear mind for days after. It would improve my well being and allow me let go of my tensions. With my talent of dancing, I could bring people together, allowing them to release their minds into music. Everyone would have a clearer mind if they danced every once and a while. I think I could help do this.

  2. In a 24-hour time period, I would dedicate all the time to an animal search and rescue organization. Animals are a dear part of my life and my cousin Alison, an animal officer, influences me to care more about animals I see that have no affiliation to me or my life. Hearing about animal cruelty is one of the worst things I think someone could do to another living thing. Animals, especially domestic trained dogs, are companions and should be treated as such, meaning, they (animals) deserve respect, loyalty, lovingness, compassion, etc. Working at Scout's Honor, a dog rescue, foster, and adoption organization, further drives me to be a patriot for animal rights and friend. I believe that this would be a good time worthy activity to spend a full day on because the issue means a lot to me, is a persistent issue in our community, and opens awareness to the issue. The more participation shown in this issue would bring further awareness to it through participation and I would be a part of it.

  3. I aspire to be in a place that encourages diversity and commits itself to spreading cultural awareness. A unique experience influenced me to pop the social bubble that once surrounded me. It may sound hokey, but I was volunteering at a homeless shelter last Christmas, serving Christmas dinner, when I met a woman in the bathroom. She exuded energy and vitality, and I could not help but strike up a conversation. Although we spoke for only five minutes, her message resonated with me: instructions to explore the world, embrace other cultures, and see beyond my narrow upbringing. With her in mind, and only 24 hours to spare I would photograph outside the corner we have grown accustomed to, portraying my thoughts through each image. Through these intriguing photos, I hope to enlighten people of what we are missing out on and the little we are learning by just waiting in our comfortable community. Blindness, the unwillingness to notice something apparent to others, can only hurt us in the long run. Making a difference, I hope more people overcome their fears by exploring the “unknown”.

  4. I would use my 24 hours to create an organization that would introduce sports to the poorer neighborhoods in Houston. A program like this would benefit kids that lack the money to be able to play sports like baseball and football that require extensive amounts of equipment. I believe that the community would be much better off with kids playing these sports. They could develop skills that would allow them to perform at their schools and perhaps take their abilities to higher levels, perhaps professional if they are lucky. This also keeps kids out of trouble and gives them the opportunity to have fun with friends instead of hanging out on the street. I believe that by doing this I could bring communities closer together by just playing simple games.

  5. If I was given the chance to devote 24 hours of my life to a single cause, I would try to do as much as I can for unprivileged children. Everyone in this community has the privileges to attend school, drive cars, play sports, and basically to just enjoy life. There are too many young people of this generation who are being left in the dust while the rest of us continue to blaze on. I do not think that I have any extremely unique characteristics that would help improve the situation, but I do have a passion for just helping others. How depressing is it to see little kids wearing raggedy old clothes while your sitting in your air conditioned cars. I recall being in Vietnam and being a witness of the poverty that is present in that country. 24 hours is just not enough to devise a whole plan on trying to save the futures of some of our generation, but it does help. Sometimes we have to give back more than we have been given.

  6. In 24 hours, I would do my best to give my time to the Challenger baseball league. This organization, which allows physical challenged kids to play baseball, has been a part of West University baseball for years and is something I love to participate in. As kids, baseball is the popular sport that most kids play, and every child deserves the opportunity to play. I would love to do this because baseball has played an important part in my life since I was a kid, and I would like to see the kids enjoy it as much as I did. I have grown up helping out with Challenger league and every year working with the kids become more enjoyable. There is nothing like seeing those kids out there having fun playing the greatest sport of all time. To see their reaction when they hit the ball, throw someone out, or score has created a memory and a feeling I will always remember. Even though I cannot help them with their physical disability, doing something like this is the least I could do to help. 24 hours would not be enough for me to teach and help them learn the sport that has acted as a get away and a door for many opportunities that lay ahead of me.

  7. With 24 hours I would try to do one thing that could help the community. I would first figure out the main problems with the community, and then try to form a plan to fix one of the problems. Maybe try to find a home for the homeless people in the area. In one day, I could travel around, figure out how many homeless people their are near me and hopefully find a place for them to live. Also if I was given 24 hours I could be more creative because without school my mind would not be in school mode which just completes assignments. I could also work with everyone else who has 24 hours off. Atlassian, a smart company showed what happened when just they had a day off. So if I did and the rest of the world then something would probably get done.
